sympathetic migration

The birds have been on the move this last week and so have we, leaving La Tache after 18 months and moving back to La Poterie.
Several pied flycatchers have been in the garden there this week along with a spotted flycatcher, firecrests both species of redstart, chiffchaff, willow warbler, melodious warbler, nuthatch and short-toed treecreeper. A few house martins have been flying with the swallows
A curious record on August 15 was the sound of a small group of cranes around midnight. This is exceptionally eary for migration.
A tree pipit was near la Poterie and yesterday a wheatear flew from the sunflowers on the Lairiere plains.

  1. Congratulations on moving back in to your house. We hope that you have many happy years there.

An unusual spot for us in our orchard today - A Rock Sparrow was feeding a juvenile in the hedge. We watched for over half an hour so we were able to get a good look with the binoculars and the yellow "bib" confirmed the id.

The juvenile stayed put in the shade while the parent (or parents) went back and forth with food. At least one adult was visibly distressed by the heat; it kept pausing in the shade of the hedge with its beak wide open and wings half spread as if it was panting.

We've seen Rock Sparrows here before; a pair nested in a crevice in the wall of one of our buildings one year but until today we've not seen them again.

    1. Great stuff. I've yet to catch up with rock sparrow in Charente. Please keep me posted.

Thanks for the congrats. I've just got back from a week in the UK and we as yet have no phone or internet at La Poterie. This is being sent from our wifi at La Tache but we officially leave here tomorrow.
